What are the standards for electrical panels? 

It is often a requirement of electrical panels to comply with very specific standards and certifications, especially industrial panels, such as IEC 61439, UL 508A, or NEMA standards depending on where and how a control panel is intended for use. 

Compliance is, of course, mandatory, and ensures electrical panels meet safety, performance, and quality requirements.

Designing and specifying electrical panels: 

  • Voltage Rating – including 120V, 240V, 480V, or higher, depending on the application
  • Current Rating – ranging from a few amperes to thousands of amperes, depending on load requirements
  • Short-Circuit Rating – this represents the maximum fault current level that the panel can safely withstand without damaging its components
  • Enclosure Type – specifies the level of protection provided by the panel’s housing against environmental factors
  • Construction Material – the construction material of the panel enclosure is typically specified and depends on factors like corrosion resistance, durability, and weight 
  • Busbar Type & Size – to be specified for their material, cross-sectional area, and rating
  • Circuit Breaker Type – circuit breakers installed in the panel should be defined, including their current rating, breaking capacity, trip characteristics, and whether they are thermal-magnetic or electronic trip units
  • Control and Monitoring Devices: If appropriate, panels may include control & monitoring devices; their specifications will depend on the monitoring and control requirements of the electrical system
  • Wiring & Termination – panel wiring & termination details must be specified, including conductor sizes, insulation types, and connection methods
